Despite significant progress in recent decades, maternal and neonatal mortality, morbidity, and stillbirths
remain unacceptably high globally, indicating persistent health inequities. Adolescent pregnancy remains
a significant global public health concern, with millions of adolescents facing the challenges of unintended
pregnancies each year. Inadequate access to sexual and reproductive health and rights services and
commodities for millions of women worldwide, including family planning and safe abortion, contributes to
significant global maternal and neonatal mortality and morbidity and stillbirths. The escalating number of
people, including pregnant women and newborns, residing in humanitarian or fragile settings, exacerbated
by the impacts of climate change, poses significant challenges. Severe medical, psychological, social and
economic outcomes stem from people’s experiences in these crisis situations, affecting every aspect of the
lives and well-being of women, newborns, partners, families and communities.
